On June 6, 2025, the Tribeca Film Festival and CHANEL co-hosted their annual 'Through Her Lens' luncheon at New York City's Greenwich Hotel courtyard, celebrating a decade of supporting women and non-binary filmmakers. The event brought together a diverse array of talent from film, television, and fashion, underscoring the program's commitment to fostering inclusive storytelling in the entertainment industry.
Established in 2015, 'Through Her Lens: The Tribeca CHANEL Women’s Filmmaker Program' offers mentorship and funding to emerging U.S.-based women and non-binary filmmakers. Over the past ten years, the initiative has facilitated the development of 45 short films, with several premiering at major festivals like Sundance and TIFF and securing distribution through platforms such as Max, Searchlight, and Criterion. Notably, eight of the nine winning filmmakers have been women of color, reflecting the program's dedication to amplifying underrepresented voices in cinema.
The luncheon was attended by a host of celebrities who have been vocal advocates for gender equity in the arts. Actress Parker Posey made a dramatic entrance in a see-through peplum-style top with a contrasting black pussy bow, complemented by a feathered cape, loose trousers, and a Chanel flap bag. Miley Cyrus brought a rockstar edge to the event, donning an all-leather ensemble consisting of a vest and pleated skirt, paired with sheer tights. She was accompanied by her mother, Tish Cyrus, with whom she shared affectionate moments throughout the afternoon.
Other notable attendees included actresses Carrie Coon, Mariska Hargitay, Olivia Munn, Riley Keough, and Misty Copeland, each showcasing their unique styles while engaging in meaningful conversations about the importance of supporting women in film.
The event featured speeches from influential figures in the film industry. Director Patty Jenkins, a member of the program's advisory committee, emphasized the profound responsibility of storytelling, stating, "I've realized, actually, the most powerful thing that I can do is what I've been trained to do my life, which is to tell a story."
A.V. Rockwell, an alumna of 'Through Her Lens,' expressed gratitude for the program's role in her career, noting, "The programs are part of the reason why I’m here and able to continue doing what I do."
Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Festival, highlighted the program's impact, sharing that nine filmmakers have received full funding to complete their shorts, with many projects premiering at prestigious festivals and being acquired by major platforms.
The luncheon not only honored the achievements of women filmmakers but also served as a showcase for fashion, with many guests wearing designs from CHANEL's recent collections. The event underscored the synergy between fashion and film, illustrating how both industries can collaborate to support and elevate diverse voices.
As 'Through Her Lens' enters its second decade, the program continues to provide vital support to emerging filmmakers. The upcoming three-day immersive workshop, scheduled for September 2025, will offer participants one-on-one mentorship, script-to-screen development, and opportunities to present their projects to industry experts. One team will receive full financing to produce their short film, while others will be awarded development grants to advance their projects.
