Little Simz Opens Up About New Album 'Lotus' and Personal Struggles

British rapper and actress Little Simz, born Simbiatu Ajikawo, has released her sixth studio album, Lotus, on June 6, 2025. The album stands as a testament to her resilience and evolution as an artist, delving into themes of betrayal, self-doubt, and personal growth.

Lotus emerges from a period of significant personal and professional upheaval for Simz. She faced creative fatigue after releasing five albums in a decade, compounded by a public fallout with longtime collaborator Inflo. Their deteriorated friendship led to a £1.7 million legal dispute, casting a shadow over the album's creation. In an interview with The Guardian, Simz reflected on her state during the album's inception: "I genuinely felt like I could disappoint everyone," she said. "Sorry, everyone, this could be a big waste of your time, and if it is, I'm truly sorry, but I'm just not confident right now."

The album features collaborations with artists like Obongjayar, Moonchild Sanelly, Lydia Kitto, Moses Sumney, Miraa May, Yukimi Nagano, Wretch 32, Cashh, Michael Kiwanuka, Yussef Dayes, and Sampha. These collaborations enrich the album's texture, offering diverse sonic landscapes that complement Simz's introspective lyrics.

The Line of Best Fit awarded the album a 9/10, praising it as a "narrative-arresting masterpiece" that affirms Simz's position as a leading figure in conscious rap.
