Ed Sheeran says he's now in “the best shape” of his life, following a fitness journey fueled by a desire to push himself physically and see if he could actually get a six-pack.

In a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Small Stage Series with Andy Cohen, the 34-year-old singer explained that last year he had gained a significant amount of weight and decided to hit the gym hard to lose “a stone” (about 14 lbs). As his discipline solidified, he started thinking how far he could take his transformation. That’s when he set a new goal: abs. “I’ve never actually ever had a six pack in my life and I was like ‘I’m gonna see if I can do it,’” he said.

Of course, it has its struggles. Sheeran admitted he still “keeps messing up” when temptation strikes say, when he’s out and feels like having “a couple of beers.” But overall, he feels pleased with how far he’s come. “I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life,” he told Cohen.

Sheeran’s health transformation actually started years ago when he quit smoking in 2019. That decision marked a turning point he pivoted toward exercise, particularly running, which became a way to clear his lungs and regain vitality. The pandemic period also offered space to adopt cleaner habits, including cutting down on takeout. All of this laid the groundwork for the more recent push.

He’s candid about how much his relationship with his body and image has changed. Early on he felt pressure to match the physiques of peers in pop music so many contemporaries seemed to always have six-packs, and Sheeran often questioned why he didn’t. But now he seems to have found a balance: he’s driven but also forgiving of his slipups.

Sheeran’s path underscores a larger truth: transformation is rarely linear. Goals change, setbacks happen, and what matters is resilience. He’s not chasing ideals set by others; he’s discovering strength on his own terms.
